Street Jesus

by Richard W. Webb

verse 1

I remember one day I was walkin’ down the street,
And I ran into this guy who said, "Man, I ain’t had much to eat."
And I said, "Just get yourself a job and you can eat this very day."
And he just thanked me as he slowly walked away. And I say

chorus

"Oh, Street Jesus, I didn’t know just what to do.
Oh, Street Jesus, I didn’t know that it was you."
I’m sayin’, "Oh, Lord, I’m just a Christian without a clue.
And how was I to know that it was you?"

verse 2

And I remember a night, I was drivin’ down the street.
I saw a man by the roadside lookin’ dead out on his feet.
But he was big and scary lookin’ and the night was dark. Oh, my!
And I saw him wave as I quickly drove on by. And I say

chorus

"Oh, Street Jesus, I didn’t know just what to do.
Oh, Street Jesus, I didn’t know that it was you."
I’m sayin’, "Oh, Lord, I’m just a Christian without a clue.
And how was I to know that it was you?"

verse 3

Now my time is at hand and I’m standin’ at the gate,
Face to face with my Savior, and I guess I sealed my fate.
With a sadness in his eye he said, "As you treat the least of these . . ."
And I cried out as I fell down to my knees. My heart cried out

chorus

"Oh, Street Jesus, I didn’t know just what to do.
Oh, Street Jesus, I didn’t know that it was you."
I’m sayin’, "Oh, Lord, I’m just a Christian without a clue.
And how was I to know that it was you?"

chorus again

"Oh, Street Jesus, I didn’t know just what to do.
Oh, Street Jesus, I didn’t know that it was you."
I’m sayin’, "Oh, Lord, I’m just a Christian without a clue.
And how was I to know — how was I to know — How was I to know that it was you?"

scripture

Matthew 25:40 — [40] And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Matthew 22:36-40 — [36] Master, which is the great commandment in the law? [37] Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Matthew 7:1-12 — [1] Judge not, that ye be not judged. [2] For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. [3] And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? [4] Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? [5] Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye. [6] Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. [7] Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: [8] For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. [9] Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? [10] Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? [11] If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? [12] Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

1 Corinthians 13:1-13 — [1] Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. [2] And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. [3] And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. [4] Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, [5] Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; [6] Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; [7] Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. [8] Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. [9] For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. [10] But when that which is perfect come, then that which is in part shall be done away. [11] When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. [12] For now we see through a glass darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. [13] And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
