What Would You Do If . . .

by Richard W. Webb

verse 1

What would you do if the night was so clear,
If the star was so bright, and the angel so near
On the fleece-lined hillside at the edge of the night?
Would you bow down and thank him for the wonderful sight?

verse 2

What would you do if you knew him so bold,
And you saw the dove touch him in the river so cold,
And you walked along with him, and you sat by his side?
If you heard him tell his stories, would you in him abide?

chorus

And what would you do if he called you out by name,
And your life fin’ly mattered, and you’d never be the same?
Would you stand up and be counted, or just stare off into space?
Would you show the world the prize that you won by his grace?

verse 3

What would you do, if, while on bended knee,
You looked up and you saw him nailed to the tree?
And as you waited you remembered ev’ry word you heard him say . . .
What would you do when he rolled the stone away?

solo

verse 4

What would you do if somebody died for you?
Would you keep it to yourself, or tell everyone you knew
All about your great good fortune, and the gift we all can share?
I bet you’d shout it from the rooftop to all people everywhere!

chorus

And what would you do if he called you out by name,
And your life fin’ly mattered, and you’d never be the same?
Would you stand up and be counted, or just stare off into space?
Would you show the world the prize that you won by his grace?

repeat chorus

The truth is plain. Believe it! He has called you out by name,
Your life can fin’ly matter. You won’t ever be the same.
Just stand up and be counted, and seek his holy face.
And tell everyone about the prize you won by his grace.
I said accept him as your master and call on Jesus’ name.
Make him Lord of your life. You won’t ever be the same.

scripture

John 3:16 — For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Luke 2:8-20 — [8] And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. [9] And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. [10] And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. [11] For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. [12] And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. [13] And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, [14] Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. [15] And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. [16] And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. [17] And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. [18] And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. [19] But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. [20] And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

John 1:29-34 — [29] The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. [30] This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. [31] And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. [32] And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. [33] And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. [34] And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

Isaiah 49:1 — Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.

John 10:1-5 — [1] Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. [2] But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. [3] To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. [4] And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. [5] And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.
